Ellen Bourke, only daughter of John Bourke and Judith Meehan.

Ellen Bourke was the last child and only daughter born to John Bourke and Judith Meehan. She was born in 1851 in Kilmore, just two years prior to her father’s death.
Ellen was raised by her mother in Kilmore, and was a young woman in her twenties when she, along with her mother and brothers, selected farming land at Burramine in North-east Victoria. She selected blocks of 170 and 148 acres respectively, next door to her brother Paddy. After her marriage, Ellen ( pictured above) added a further 306 acres which she farmed with her husband.
Ellen Bourke married John Francis Mannix, the eldest son of an influential Kilmore family. He was born on July 10, 1850, to parents James Mannix and Mary Bourke. His father owned a large amount of land at Bylands, near Kilmore, and John was one of nine children born to James and Mary Mannix ( others were Margaret, Ned, Tom, Larry, Pat, Lawrence, James and Mary Ann).
John’s mother, Mary Bourke, spent her last years living with her son’s family at Burramine, up until her death. She was buried in the Burramine Cemetery, and her headstone reads as follows:

“ Gloria In Excelsis Deo. In memory of Mary Mannix, native of Limerick, Ireland, who departed this life 21 July, 1891, aged 62 years. R.I.P.”

John Mannix was a very well respected member of the Burramine community in which he farmed. He and Ellen had a family of three daughters and four sons. Two of the Mannix boys, Peter and James, died when they were young.
This researcher, despite extensive searches of the Victorian marriage index, has found no marriage date for Ellen Bourke and John Mannix. The birth of their first child, Judith Mannix, occurred in 1885 when Ellen was 34, so presumably she married John in the years immediately preceding the birth.
Those children who survived infancy- Judith, Mary, Maggie, John and William- were raised on their parents’ farm, and attended Boosey North Catholic School with many of their Bourke cousins.
Ellen was widowed in 1901, leaving children aged 16 to 6 without a father. John Mannix was only 50 years old when he died on April 22, 1901. He was buried in the Burramine Cemetery, and his memorial inscription reads as follows:

“ Gloria In Excelsis Deo. Erected by Ellen Mannix to the memory of her beloved husband John Francis Mannix died 22 April, 1901, aged 50 years. Also their children James Peter and James who died in infancy. R.I.P.”

Ellen Bourke also cared for her mother Judith in her last years. Judith Meehan Bourke died in 1904, and in her will she left her only daughter Ellen Mannix all of her cattle and personal effects.

When an old woman, Ellen went to live with one of her daughters, Margaret Considine, in Melbourne. It was while she was staying there that she met her untimely end, falling down the stairs during the night and dying from the resulting injuries.

Ellen’s death certificate gives the details following:

“ 3rd June, 1932, at 225 Victoria Street, west Melbourne, Ellen Mary Mannix, home duties, aged 81 years. Cause of death injuries when she fell down stairs. Accident verdict at inquest held by D.Grant, Coroner, 14 June, 1932. parents John Bourke farmer and Judith Bourke formerly Meehan. Buried June 4, 1932, at Fawkner Cemetery. Born Kilmore, Victoria.
