Timothy Bourke was born on December 4, 1857, at Slab Hut Creek, Bylands, Kilmore, to 35 year old Bridget Bourke and her 40 year old husband Patrick . He was baptised when only two days old by Father O’Rourke, and his sponsors were Maurice and Catherine Mulchinock.
Tim was educated at Kilmore, and moved with his family to Pine Lodge when they started farming there in the early 1870s.
In 1884, aged 27 years, Timothy Bourke married Mary Ann Howard, the daughter of James Howard and Ann O'Brien. After the death of his father in 1886, they moved to the Boosey area where several of his siblings were already settled.
In 1891 he registered the death of his niece Annie Bourke, and signed himself as “Timothy Bourke, Uncle, Boosey”. As late as 1909 Timothy and his family were still living in the Shepparton district, but the electoral roll for 1914 reveals that the family had moved to the city and were living at 23 Beaconsfield Parade, Northcote:
