PATRICK JOHN BOURKE: Born 1877, Arcadia. Known as Pat or “P.J”, he was a wonderful sportsman on both the football field and athletics track. Family tradition has it that he once held a world track record, perhaps over hurdles, but as yet we haven’t be able to find evidence to support this claim.
Pat would travel around all of the district sporting events throughout Victoria to compete. Nell Bourke, his niece, wrote “they would pack up and take food, and stay for a week!”
He was a member of the Burramine South Football Club which won three consecutive premierships in 1897, 1898 and 1899 while playing in the Yarrawonga and District and Border Association. The Maroon and Blues were only just thwarted in their attempt to take out the 1900 Flag, and were again successful in 1901.
Patrick earned his living as a farmer, like his father and grandfather before him. He never married, and died in about 1951, aged 74. Veronica Lonergan, his niece, wrote “ As small children, my sister and I often stayed at his home in Youanmite and later at Cobram East. His first cousin, Gertrude McCluskey, house-kept for him”.
